Abstract

The subject of this paper is Huizache-Caimanero Lagoon, wich has a great social and economical importance, and for many papers published in the last 20 years, this lagoon is one of the best known in Mexico. This system is characterized like a trpical lagoon barrier isolated in dry season from the sea, with high variations like: loosing 63% in dry season fron an area of 17,890 ha; salinity ranges between 3 and 60% and temperature between 20-30°C. The nutrients sources are mainly aloctonous. In 40 years the yield of shrimp fishery, in despite of graet fluctuations, has a tendence to increase related to environmental management. In gap with fishery, the shrimp culture began in 1972 with the construction of 3 ha of ponds, which after 14 years have been added 134 ha, with an average of 150 kg/ha. The importance of the shrimp culture and fishery is discussed in relation with enviromental, social and economical aspects.
