Abstract

The lagoon system of Alvarado and Términos are two of the most important estuarine environments of the Gulf of Mexico, which have an increase in anthropogenic activity in the surronding areas that can influence in a regional physicochemical and biological characteristics. This paper evaluates the of both lagoons, through temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, chlorophill "a" and primary production. Compared to the Terminos Lagoon. Alvarado Lagoon, registered a high seasonal fluctuation, the nitrites had a monthly rate from indetectable to 9 µgat/I, nitrates, plus nitrites were 35 to 140 times greather, and it is twise less productive. This condition is the result of human avtivities. The excretion products were 63 times lower than in Terminos Lagoon. Alvarado Lagoon is eutrophic and, if waste discharges continue, the lagoon will lose its depuration and nutrient recycling capacity.
