Abstract

Levels of heavy metals (Cu, Ni, Co, Cr, Pb, Cd and Zn) present in surficial and bivalves (Crassostrea virginica, Gmelin, 1971) from Laguna de Términos, Campeche, México; were determined from 1985-1986. In sediemnts the analysis were conducted in four fractions: I. Non-detritic, II. Coupled to carbonates, III. Binding to organic matter and sulfides as well as IV. Coupled to Fe and Monoxides.

The results shown high concentrations of metals (Cu, Ni, Co, Cr and Zn) in th west side of the lagoon with the exception of Pb and Cd whose concentrations are higher in the east portion of the system. For the  oyster C. virginica the levels of metals were increased during rainy seaso with the exception of Pb wich presents its maximum values during north winds period.

The comparison of the results with other studies previously reported in the study area indicate an increase trend form Cr and Pb probably related with the industrial and human development in the nearbys of the lagoon.
