First record of the freshwater amphipod Hyalella azteca (Amphipoda: Senticaudata) in Cuautla, Morelos, Mexico

Resumo

Background. In Mexico, four species of freshwater amphipods of the genus Hyalella have been reported in 14 states of the republic, however, the state of Morelos had no previous record. Objectives. The aim of this work was to address a new record of Hyalella azteca in Morelos, Mexico. Methods. The amphipods were collected in water springs near to Cuautla, Morelos, Mexico, and preserved in 70% alcohol. Results. H. azteca was recognized with the aid of morphological characteristics along with variations such as the distance of the setae in the tip of telson and a large lobe in the posterodistal margin of gnathopod 2. Conclusions. This is the first record of the species in the state of Morelos, Mexico.
