Abstract

Hydrological data taken periodicaly in five coastal lagoons from Oaxaca, México, were compared in order to discuss, their diferences and similarities. Regarding nutrients concentration data, these systems can be considered as slighthly eutrophic; nevertheless, in phytoplankton primary production the N:P ratio is more relevant than nutrients concentration by itself. The importance of the freshwater input and the changes derived from human activities is emphasized, because the latter are altering significantly the ecological patterns in these lagoons.
