Abstract

The present report deals with the species composition of fish larvae collected during five oceanographic cruises which covered the Pacific Coast of Southen Baja California, Mexico. These surveys were accomplished during May and August-September, as these months represent the extreme conditions in the flow intensity of the California Current. The dates of the cruises here reported are the following: May and Septemer 1983, May 1984 and May and August 1985. The oarticular interest from these results is that they include a period of anomalus warm conditions at this region, namely the El Niño event of 1982-1983. This is reflected in the latitudial distribution of fish larvae from the Eastern Tropical Pacific, such as the myctophid fish Benthosema panamense which were located north from their reported distribution, as well as by a reduction in the latitudinal distribution of fish larvae which characterize transitional water from the California Current, such the myctophid fish Protomyctophum crockeri.
