Background. The Veracruz Reef System National Park (VRSNP) is home to many fish, molluscs, and brachyuran and anomuran crustacean species, among other groups. Objetive. The goal of this study was to evaluate the composition and density of zoeae of the family Porcellanidae in seagrass and sandy substratum areas on the Isla de Sacrificios within the VRSNP. Methods. Organisms were collected using light traps, sampling began at 21:00 h on the first day and concluded at 20:00 h on the following day. Results. A total of 10 808 first-stage zoeae of the species Petrolisthes armatus, Neopisosoma angustifrons, and Megalobrachium soriatum were collected at temperatures ranging between 28 °C and 29 °C and a salinity of 35 psu. In seagrass beds, P. armatus and M. soriatum reached peak densities of 2 074 and 468 zoeae/L, respectively, at 22:00 h. In the sandy substrate, both species peaked at 23:00 h, P. armatus with 1 980 zoeae/L and M. soriatum with 578 zoeae/L. A three-way analysis of variance revealed statistically significant differences between sampling hour (P = 0.003) and between species (P = 0.002) but no between substrates (P = 0.38). Conclusions. The high density of porcellanid zoeae observed in this study can be attributed to the highest temperatures recorded in the region, which provide suitable conditions for their reproduction. The difference in density between sampling times is due to the vertical migrations undertaken by the zoeae as a strategy to avoid predators.
