Abstract

This introductory part of our tretise presents the general ideas behind the application of dynamic optimiation procedures to the management of a fishery. A heuristic derivation of Bellman's equation of dynamic programming is provided. The Pontryagin Maximum Principle is also justified at that level of presentation. This last result is applied to characterize the control strategy that induces the maximum social benefit derived from the fishery. The optimality of the derived strategy is corroborated by mens of a direct nalysis and included in a first appendix invoking impulse controls in the autonomous case; in a second one we include nd eample of the use of dynamic programming methods for the derivation of the above quoted strategy.
