Abstract

We present here the quantification of urea in diferent coastal environments of Mexico. In general, considering all the nitrogen forms, the concentration of urea can be the second in terms of importance after ammonia. Also, its distribution presents two kinds of patterns, patchy, which is generally the dominant, or plume pattern, mainly located in areas of high human influence. When the urea concentration is considered along with th other nitrogenous forms normally determined (NO3, NONH4), it can amount from 6 to 35% of the total nitrogen. Therefore, it is recommended that the evaluation of urea should be included in the hydrological studies of this environments due to the fact that it can be very helpful and important to determine the nitrogen concentration of the system, but also to detect areas with high human influence.
