Abstract

Surface and oblique tows of zooplankton were realized in the Colombian Pacific Ocean (OPC) during seven cruises carried out between 2001 and 2007. Early (I, III, IV), intermediate (V, VI, VII, VIII), and final larval stages (IX, X) of P. gracilis were captured. In general, their distribution was quite wide, between 19 and 555 km offshore. The density ranged between 3 and 16 Ind./1000 m3 , showing more than one cohort. The distribution by stage indicated a major trend of the final stages to be distributed away from the continent, one possible spawning area, and another potential settlement area, where even adults are not registered. This distribution pattern is probably associated with the circulation in the OPC, retaining and / or dispersing larvae. A higher occurrence of early stages in relatively more warm water and evidence of nocturnal migration to the surface, especially during first quarter and full moon were also observed.
