Abstract

The main hydrological characteristics of 19 localities throughout the estuarine system of Larga-Redonda-Mandinga on the coast of Veracruz are described, and the malacological fauna present int he samples of damp surface sediment obtained using a van Veen grb is nalysed. The system consist of three bodies of water that have been registered as shallow, warm, turbid and mesohalyne, with a predominntly silty-clay substrate. 32 species of mollusks were identified in the area: 20 pertaining to the Class Gastropoda and 12 to the Class Bivalvia, with diversity values of .52 and 1.07 bits/individual, respectively. The data on abundance, frequency and density (individuals/m2) points to a dominant community composed of si species tht mke up 95% of the organisms that were collected. The similrity among the components of the samples or localities of the system has an average values of 41% for the Phylum Mollusca. Thus, approximately 41% of the species is common to all sampling localities. The greter part of the populations of mollusks in this estuarine system in mrine-brckish, epifaunal and deposit feeder.
