Abstract

During summer of 1987 nd 1988, the phytoplanktonic primary production, was registered during diurnal cycles, along five consecutive days in the Inlet of La Paz, B. C. S. The sampling station was located in the eternal side of the communication channel with the Bay of La Paz. Three layers were smpled: surface, 50 and 25% of incident light. The measurements were carried out with the oxygen method in light-dark bottles, and also measuring the quantity of chlorophyll a. For the summer of 1987, gross primary production fluctuated from 1o to 347 mg C/m2/h and for the summer of 1988, from 75 to 35 mgC/m2/h. This production showed a variation pattrn concident with the tide cycle. The entry of waters of the Bay of La Paz, apparently increases this production. The pigment concentrations were different in both summers with values between 2.01 to 6.60 mg Chl a/m2 in 1987 and from 13.9 to 18.7 mg Chl a/m2 in 988. The high quantities of pigment, registered in 1988 were possibly originted by the presence of popultions emerged from the bottom of the photic layer, adapted to low irrditions and dragged to the surface by a surgence in preparation, evident by the temperture decrease.
