Abstract

Background. Within the framework of the project on fish connectivity of fish mullets on the coasts of Mexico, Mugilid collections began in 2023 on the coasts of Mexico. Objective. To document the extension of the range of the mullet agugú (Mugil thoburni) to the coasts of the Gulf of California. Methods. Fish were recollected from commercial capture. Results. A new record of Mugil thoburni is presented in the Gulf of California in Santa Rosalía, Baja California Sur, Mexico. M. thoburni has been reported for the Galapagos Islands with records from Guatemala, Panama, and Peru to the coasts of Jalisco and Nayarit in Mexico, the latter at the northern limit of the Tropical eco-region of the Eastern Pacific, and in this report, this distribution extends approximately 850 km North of the coasts of Nayarit in Santa Rosalía, Baja California Sur in the Temperate eco-region of the Northen Pacific. The presence of this species could be because 2023 was atypically warmer, declared as a strong El Niño, so there would be warmer water masses in relatively more temperate areas. Conclusion. With this report, Mugil thoburni extends its presence further north in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.
